The MacTutor CD-ROM contains the content of all MacTutor source code disks (1984-1989 vol. 1-5) Major sections of the CD-ROM include:
• Source Code -- Contains the information from each floppy.
• MacTutor Index -- Hypercard stack and text index files
for subject & author searches.
• TextWare™ Retrieval Software -- A high speed full text
search engine.
The Source Code folder contains 2600 files in 635 directories which include source code and compiled versions of programs from each issue of MacTutor (Disks #1 to #51).
The MacTutor Index folder contains a Hypercard stack of the MacTutor magazine articles and references page numbers in the magazine as well as in the "Best of MacTutor" books.
The MacTutor database of source code files was indexed using TextWare™ for rapid search and retrieval. To familiarize yourself with the searching and retrieval techniques, please follow the steps outlined below.
To begin double-click on the TextWare Icon and wait for the start-up screen to appear.
Click anywhere to start. A Navigation Window will appear on the right hand portion of the screen. The same commands appear under the Navigation Menu in the Menu Bar.
To begin searching select Find from the the Navigation Window or the Navigation Menu. What you will have is a screen that looks like this:
To search for WaitNextEvent, type WaitNextEvent into the Search Word Box and click on the Search Button.
This will return a Hit List of all cards containing WaitNextEvent. Double-click on the card you wish to view.
As an example of a more complex search try a search for all cards containing WaitNextEvent and Draw but not GetNextEvent.
This will return a Hit List of all cards containing the WaitNextEvent and Draw which do not contain GetNextEvent. Double-click on the card you wish to view.
NAVIGATING AROUND WITHIN THE DATABASE
CARD
Clicking the right arrow under the Card title moves you to the next card in the database. Clicking the left arrow moves you to the previous card in the database.
HITLIST
Clicking the right arrow moves you the next card it the Hit List that was returned from your most recent use of the Find command. Clicking the left arrow moves you to the previous card in the Hit List.
IMAGE
Clicking the right arrow moves you to the next card that has an image associated with it. Clicking the left arrow moves you to the previous card that has an image associated with it.(The MacTutor Database does not contain any images.)
OPTIONS MENU
HIDE NAVIGATION WINDOW
This command hides the navigation window.
SUPPRESS TEXT
This command hides the text on the current card and all future cards until you unsuppress the text. This is particularly useful when one desires to only look at images. Suppress the text and click the right arrow under image.
SUPPRESS IMAGE
This command hides the image on the current card and all future cards until you unsuppress the image. This is particularly useful when one desires to only look at text. Suppress the image and click the right arrow under card. (The MacTutor Database does not contain any images.)
COMPLEX SEARCHING
TextWare™ also supports additional Boolean search operators. The search phrases must be typed into the Search word box. Example search phrases are listed below.
Truth OR Beauty
Finds all cards containing references to either truth or beauty or both.
Truth OR NOT Beauty
Finds all cards containing either truth or that do not contain beauty.
Truth ANDNOT Beauty OR Beauty ANDNOT Truth
Finds all cards that contain either truth or beauty but not both.
President OR Crook AND 18 Minutes OR Expletive Deleted.
Finds all cards that contain either president or crook and which also contain either of the phrases 18 minutes or expletive deleted.
WILD CARD SEARCHING
Wild card searching is very valuable when you are uncertain of the spellings or variations of a common root word. The syntax for a wild card is the asterisk - *. Type part of the word and an asterisk into the Search Word box and click on the search button.
This returns all cards containing words that start with fget. Double-click on the card you wish to view.
